The Tax Policy Center released estimates of the alternative minimum tax (AMT) collections during the next 10 years. The picture is pretty bleak.
The first thing you notice when studying this release is that the AMT unfairly taxes the following taxpayers:

Those who claim deductions for state income taxes—obviously, taxpayers who live in high-tax states pay the most AMT for this privilege.

Those who file joint returns—the combined income of married couples makes the AMT more likely to apply.
