Mom Avoids Self-Employment Tax When She Gets Paid for Painting CPA’s Office

My mom is retired. In July, she wallpapered and painted my CPA office, for which I paid her $8,300. She is not in the business of wallpapering and painting offices, and that made me think that she might escape self-employment taxes on the $8,300.

 

Before she retired about 10 years ago, she worked as an executive secretary for a Fortune 500 company. Her painting of my office is pretty much the only work for hire she has done since she retired.
